The popular Green Lake neighborhood in northeast Seattle derives it name from, not surprisingly, a lake in the center of the neighborhood. Although most people think it’s name derives from the green color of the water, it was actually named in 1855 by surveyor David Green. Bonus trivia point: it is a glacial, freshwater lake dug 50,000 years ago by the Vashon glacier, which also created Lake Washington and Lake Union.
Green Lake includes zip codes 98103 and 98115 and is home to both urban singles and young families. The past five years have seen considerable development with many new apartments and condos plus redevelopment of many of the classic Seattle craftsman homes that are everywhere in the neighborhood.
